The Barton County jail is operated and maintained by the local Sheriff’s Office. The current Sheriff is John Simpson and the Chief Deputy is Justin Ehrsam.

Barton County occupies 597 square miles in southwestern Missouri, along the border with Kansas. At the 2020 census, the population was 11,637. Lamar is the county seat and largest city.

Barton County Public Records Information

Records kept by the Sheriff’s Office are considered public information and copies are available in accordance with Missouri’s Sunshine Law. Requests for records do not have to adhere to any format, though it is preferred that request be written. They should describe the records requested in as much detail as possible (i.e. type of case, relevant locations, names, dates, etc). They may be delivered to the office in person or by mail, fax, or email. Each government body is required to have a custodian of records who responds to public records requests.
