The Buchanan County jail is located in St. Joseph, Missouri. It has three separate housing units with a total bed capacity of 234 inmates. The staff includes seven sergeants, 4 deputies, 25 detention deputies, 3 property clerks, 2 kitchen staff, a digital download specialist, and a receptionist. The jail is overseen by Custody Officer Lt. Joe Lysaght and Compliance Officer Lt. Natalie Colbech.

How to Send Mail or Package

Mail to inmates must include the sender’s full name and return address and be sent through the US Postal Service. Up to three pictures may be included in a single letter. Mail should be addressed as follows:

Deposits to inmates’ commissary accounts may be made at the lobby kiosk with cash or credit card or online at the Inmate Canteen website. For Tuesday orders, money needs to be deposited no later than 8:00 AM Monday and no later than 8:00 AM on Thursday for Friday commissary.

Visitation Hours

Inmates are provided one non-contact visit every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Visits must be scheduled in advance on Monday through Thursday from 8am to 12:30pm and 1:30pm to 5pm or Friday from 8am to 12:30pm. Appointments may be made in person or by calling (816) 236-8888. Visitors must be 18 years of age or older and provide a valid photo ID. Visitors must arrive 10 minutes early to check in or the visit will be canceled.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office operates and maintains the county jail. The current Sheriff is Bill Puett and Commander Mike Donaldson is the Chief Deputy. Captain Tiger Parsons oversees the administrative department, including public records requests. The office’s administrative hours are Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.
